Sumadija wine region

Sumadija (Serbian : Шумадија) is a north part of central Serbia. It is bordered by the Sava and Danube river in the north, Rudnik mountain in the west, Velika Morava river in the east and JuznaMorava river in the south. The region is very fertile, and it is known for its extensive fruit production (apples, grapes, plums, etc.). Between the two World Wars, the region was known for its quality white wines, which are exported to the West. After 1945 and Socialist Revolution, wine production in the private wine celars has almost stopped and the vineyards are being destroyed. Recovery begins about 20 years ago. (Second Renaissance of Serbian wine making) Today Sumadija has 25 registered wineries, about 1200 hectares of wine grapes,(mostly international grape varieties) and it is a leader in the production of high quality wines in Central Serbia. For all these reasons, and because of the geographical similarities, many call it the "Serbian Tuscany"
